“The non-harmonious, unproductive productiveness of going against…”-Emery- 3-4pm (Edward Said describes Beethoven’s late style as “non-harmonious,” engaging a “deliberately unproductive productiveness going against.” How does Beethoven create this place of contradicitons--non-harmonious harmonies--in the sounds of Opus 111?)

“Said Edward, ‘What is Late Style?’ Answered Langston Hughes, ‘Ask Your Mama’ - Nordica- 4-5pm (“Ask Your Mama” is a late work of Langston Hughes sharing ‘late-work’ qualities as defined by Edward Said and present in Beethoven’s Opus 111. [Note: Opus 111 will not be performed.])

May 7

Endings- Nordica- 7-8pm (Both movements of Beethoven’s Opus 111 turn away at the very end: the first maintains a tragic C minor until the last chord which slips into C major; the second movement avoids the usual slow movement resolution and, instead, fades into silence. Each of the variations play on this idea of ending and unexpected ending in music, literature, poetry, and beyond.)
