Solange Carpenter is currently a Fashion Design Major at Lasell College. Having known Solange for a few years, I was glad to have the chance to ask her some questions about her work in school and about the clothing that she has designed.
TP: What made you decide to major in fashion design? Were their any specific influences?
SC: I am not entirely sure. I just know that for most of my life I was always drawing, particularly dresses. I loved reading about historical fashion in books and eventually everyone started telling me I should go into design.
TP: Is there any specific brand and/or person from whom you get your inspiration for your designs?
SC: I prefer to work with and from street fashion.
TP: If there was one designer in the world that you could work with who would it be?
SC: Claire Mccardell! Well, if she was still around.
TP: Do you enjoy using one particular fabric (or fabrics) over some others, or do you utilize an array of different materials?
SC: Although I really like using knits, when I sew I try to only used recycled fabric so knits can be harder to find.
TP: Do you have a set process-of-design, like a particular routine or setting in which you design?
SC: I tend to design for music. My senior thesis collection is based on the album "Currents" by Eisley. I like to use watercolor for my sketches, and use illustrator to create my flats. I always draft by hand first too. While a lot of people like draping, I prefer to use flat pattern to draft because I feel like I can see it better when it is laid out graphically.
TP: What is your favorite article of clothing to design? (Dresses, pants, etc.)
SC: Pants and Leggings; no fly front!
TP: Last question: out of the designs that you have done thus far do you have one that you are particularly proud of over the others?
SC: One time I made a skirt out of fasteners and pokemon cards.
TP: Thank you for your time, Solange.
